Drawing: Self Portrait

Daniel Clowes
hosted by
Tony DuShane

Daniel Clowes is the artist and writer of Eightball, Ghost World and Art School Confidential.  Ghost World and Art School Confidential were both developed and written for the big screen by Clowes.

Terry Zwigoff has directed both of his screenplays.

I met Daniel at the San Francisco International Film Festival before the screening of the film he scripted, Art School Confidential.

It was a bit disconcerting interviewing him for a couple of reasons.  One, I'm a huge fan of his work ever since reading Eightball and two, he looked me in the eye for all of about 20 seconds through our whole conversation.  So, this interview was one of the more difficult ones.

He's a really nice guy and after the microphone was turned off we talked about Billy Childish and how we used to live pretty close to each other in Oakland when I lived there.

Even though I wanted to snap my fingers so he would like at me while we talked instead of keeping his eyes on the floor, the interview turned out well.

This interview was broadcast on Drinks with Tony on May 13, 2006.  A quick note regarding the background music for the intros, I was in a Pan Sonic mood, so expect a bit of abrasive audio accompanying the introduction.
