Les Claypool
hosted by
Tony DuShane

Les Claypool is the lead singer of Primus. I first saw Primus at an all ages club in Oakland in 1987 when they opened for the Red Hot Chili Peppers.  The only song my friends and I remembered from the show was the "Say Baby" song, which we later found out was titled "Tommy the Cat".

Over the next couple of years we went to every Primus show we could. Most were attended by 20-40 people.

When I DJed at a college radio station when I was older, Primus came to the studio for an interview and I stayed in the corner just to be in the same room.

One time, before my college djing days, Les remembered me when we were in the pit together at The Red Hot Chili Peppers when the Red Hots finally graduated to play The Fillmore. That was back when nobody knew who he was except for a few of us psycho fans.

After a few months at the college radio station I quickly became aware of so many other great bands and the garage punk scene that my funk/thrash days were over.

Enough about me. Les kept plugging along with his music while the funk/thrash scene in San Francisco plummeted to a quick death. The Red Hot Chili Peppers lost Hillel and started getting MTV airplay, making their shows horrid jock fests, not the fun shows they were before that were we'd know at least 50 people in the crowds.

Do you know who Fungo Mungo is? They were up there with Primus back in those days as well as The Limbomaniacs, Dot 3 and more I can't even remember.

Enough yammerin', just listen to the interview and you'll be caught up with Claypool's latest artistic ventures.
